The site I had to build twice.

Carter & Rae Yoga is my own practice. Its first website was fine, generic, and mostly written by ChatGPT, because I was spent and gave it the energy I had, which was none. The second one sounds like me. Both taught me something I now charge for.

The first version

Fine, generic, and not mine

When I launched Carter & Rae Yoga I had a full-time job, a rigorous 200-hour teacher training, four or five private lessons a week, and my own practice to keep up, and I did what tired people do: I asked ChatGPT. It gave me a site that could have belonged to any yoga teacher in America. Meets you where you are, honor your body, the whole catalog. It was accurate and it was hollow, and I knew it the moment I read it back. I published it anyway, because a hollow site beats no site when you're that tired.

You're probably wondering why a marketer is telling you this. Because it's the most common thing I see in wellness businesses, and I did it myself.

The second version

This time it sounds like me

The rebuild started with the words, and the words started with one rule: nothing goes on the page that could sit on another yoga site. So the homepage opens with the last person who came to my studio and the one decision she had to make (inside, or out on the deck). The About page is a photo of my dancer pose with a list of what's wrong with it. The booking page has the prices on it, because making someone email to find out a number is a fake step, and I don't build those.

I used Claude to build it, for the record, partly because I respect where Anthropic stands on privacy. ChatGPT wrote the first version, and the difference wasn't only the tool: this time I made it learn how I talk before it wrote a word. That's now part of what I mean when I say branding.

Words

Every line is mine, or sounds like it

Session descriptions with actual sessions in them. An About page that admits my arm is in the wrong place. Blog posts written the week things happened.

Photos

Taken on the beach, not bought

Every photo is me or my studio, shot at North Topsail or in Vermont. The dancer pose isn't perfect and I use it everywhere anyway.

Build

WordPress, so I can edit it myself

The same tier I offer clients who want to make their own changes. The booking page is a form, not a scheduler, with the prices right there on it.

Found

Set up to be read by people and by AI

Heading structure a machine can follow, alt text on every image, schema behind the pages, and a newsletter signup for people who aren't ready to book yet. The same prep list I run on client sites, run on mine first.

If your site could belong to anyone, I'd like to fix that.
